ODI World Cup 2023: Former India all-rounder Suresh Raina reveals who resembles him in the modern-day cricket

Former Indian cricketer, Suresh Raina, a versatile left-handed batter and exceptional fielder, is celebrated for his dynamic contributions to cricket. Known for his adaptability and aggressive style of play, Raina left an indelible mark on the sport during his international career. He played a pivotal role in India’s success in limited-overs cricket and was an integral part of the team that won the ICC T20 World Cup in 2007 and the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2011.

In addition to his batting prowess, Raina’s versatility extended to his role as a part-time bowler, often providing valuable overs when needed. This multifaceted approach made him an invaluable asset for the Indian cricket team.

Suresh Raina answers the tricky question

As the cricketing world evolves, the question arises: Who in modern-day cricket resembles Raina? The ideal candidate should be someone who can bat in the lower order, contribute with the ball, and excel in the field, just as Raina did during his career. Identifying such a player in the contemporary cricket landscape can be a challenging task.

However, Raina, in a recent interview with the International Cricket Council (ICC), revealed his choice for the cricketer who resembles him the most in the modern game. The Muradnagar-born legend pointed towards New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips as the player who shares his qualities.

The versatility and impact

Raina praised Phillips for his exceptional fielding skills, his ability to bat at various positions in the order, and his effectiveness as a bowler, particularly against left-handed batsmen. Phillips has displayed his prowess with both bat and ball in the ongoing ODI World Cup, impressing the cricketing world.

“And the best thing about him, he’s bowling very good against lefty because I used to bowl against lefty. I also took couple of wickets,” he added.

Performance in ODI World Cup 2023

Phillips, the South African-born cricketer representing New Zealand, has made significant contributions with his versatile skills in the ODI World Cup 2023. He has emerged as an unlikely hero in New Zealand’s bowling lineup, showcasing his ability to contribute beyond his batting prowess. With remarkable performances in the tournament, including a career-best 3/37 against Australia, Phillips has already taken six wickets in six matches.
