Shoaib Akhtar Believes Babar Azam Must Score In Big Matches To Prove Himself As A Star Player

Legendary fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar expressed his frustration over skipper Babar Azam’s poor batting performance against Australia in the ICC World Cup 2023. Shoaib Akhtar urged Babar Azam to score against formidable opponents to earn a reputation as a great player.

Babar Azam scored just 18 runs from 14 deliveries during the match against Australia at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday, October 20. Pakistan failed to chase down the 368-run target, falling short by 62 runs in their fourth match of the ongoing tournament.

Babar Azam Is A Great Player – Shoaib Akhtar

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Shoaib Akhtar acknowledged Babar Azam‘s talent but emphasized the importance of scoring against strong teams in the world.

“Babar Azam is a great player, but again, you need to play a great innings. You can’t make yourself a big name by not scoring against big teams. If you want to prove that you are a big player, you have to score runs in big games. You shouldn’t lose hope,” Akhtar said.

The Men in Green had a poor start, conceding a partnership of 259 runs for the first wicket. However, they managed to bounce back and restrict the opposition to 367 runs in the allocated 50 overs. Shaheen Shah Afridi picked up his second World Cup five-wicket haul.

Thoroughly Disappointed – Shoaib Akhtar

Akhtar questioned the decisions made by the management and expressed doubts about Pakistan’s eligibility for the World Cup semi-finals, given their upcoming challenging matches against England, New Zealand, and South Africa.

“To bring Iftikhar as the first change (in bowling), Usama Mir’s dropped catch, all this is beyond my understanding. What is the management thinking? Pakistan’s (semi-final) chances are looking grim. You still have to play England, New Zealand and South Africa. I have a question. Does this Pakistan team deserve to play in the semi-finals? Thoroughly disappointed,” he added.

The Babar Azam-led team will face Afghanistan in their next match of the tournament at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on October 23, Monday. They need to win every match to advance to the next stages of the tournament.
