World Cup 2023 – EXPLAINED: Will ICC take action against Muhammad Rizwan for his Gaza tweet

Pakistan’s wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan dedicated his match-winning ton against Sri Lanka in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 to the citizens of Gaza, in reference to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas (officially the Islamic Resistance Movement).

Pakistan pulled off a record chase of 345 runs versus Sri Lanka in Hyderabad on Tuesday, with Rizwan and Abdullah Shafique smashing brilliant centuries. Though Shafique got out after scoring 113 runs, Rizwan remained unbeaten on 131.

Rizwan’s tweet in support of Gaza

In a tweet, Rizwan expressed, “This was for our brothers and sisters in Gaza. Happy to contribute in the win. Credits to the whole team and especially Abdullah Shafique and Hassan Ali for making it easier. Extremely grateful to the people of Hyderabad for the amazing hospitality and support throughout.”

Rizwan’s tweet triggered social media outrage, with some users calling for the ICC and the BCCI to suspend the Pakistani cricketer from further participation in the marquee event. Others advised Rizwan to focus solely on cricket and refrain from commenting on global politics.

Will the ICC suspend Muhammed Rizwan?

The controversy sparked by Rizwan’s tweet for the people of Gaza has garnered a response from the International Cricket Council.

The ICC has declined to intervene in the matter, stating, “It’s outside the field of play and a matter between the PCB and the player.”

Furthermore, the ICC has firmly instructed cricketers and coaches to refrain from making any political or religious statements during global tournaments. As Rizwan expressed his opinion on Twitter and not on the cricket field, the ICC has clarified that no action will be taken against him.
